Purpose: As per Agamam, there are certain times when the deities should be bathed.

Significance: While generally bathing is private activity, bathing of perumAL, thAyArs, AzhwArs and AchAryas are considered as sacred and most auspicious. It is the great mercy of bhagavAn to present himself in different postures, etc., to purify the minds/hearts of his devotees. By watching bhagavAn’s bathing, we get purified by seeing his divine form without any ornaments, etc (that cover his natural beauty) which can be meditated upon later.

Details: Usually, deities are bathed with milk, curd, honey, coconut water, pure water mixed with turmeric and other fragrant substances. Sandalwood, saffron, etc are applied too. After bathing in public, usually deities also undergo a private bathing with pure water to get rid of the extraneous residues from milk, etc. Usually, thaiththirya upanishath, purusha sUktham, nArAyaNa sUktham, vishNu sUktham, srI sUktham, bhU sUktham, nILA sUktham and “veNNey aLaintha kuNungum” decad from periyAzhwAr thirumozhi are recited during thirumanjanam.

      Hope this helps.
